2. Publication Model

  • Publication Type
The Engineering and Sustainability Journal (ESJ) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, and online-only publication. We utilize a double-blind peer-review process to maintain the highest level of scientific integrity. As a digital-first journal, we prioritize rapid dissemination and global accessibility, ensuring that all research is available in high-quality electronic formats.

  • Publication Frequency
ESJ is published quarterly, releasing four formal issues per year. To minimize delays in the communication of scientific breakthroughs, the journal follows a Continuous Publication model. This means that individual articles are published online as soon as they have completed the peer-review and production process, rather than waiting for the full issue to be finalized.

  • Open Access Policy
ESJ provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. All content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Under this license, authors retain copyright, but the public is permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles for any lawful purpose, provided the original work is properly cited.

3. Language Policy

  • Language of Publication
The Engineering and Sustainability Journal (ESJ) publishes all its scientific content exclusively in English. Manuscripts may be submitted using either British or American English, provided the usage is consistent throughout the document. This policy ensures the widest possible global dissemination, indexing, and impact for the research hosted on the Angola-Journals.com platform.

  • Multilingual Metadata
While the full text of articles is published in English, the journal provides bilingual metadata (Titles, Abstracts, and Keywords) in both English and Portuguese. This dual-language approach supports local discoverability within Angola and the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries) while maintaining international academic standards.

4. Scientific and Editorial Policy

Peer Review Model
The Engineering and Sustainability Journal (ESJ) adheres to a rigorous and transparent evaluation system to ensure the highest quality of published research. Our model includes:

  • Double-blind Peer Review: The identities of both the authors and the reviewers are concealed from each other throughout the process to prevent bias.

  • Independent Reviewers: Each manuscript is evaluated by a minimum of two independent subject-matter experts.

  • Conflict Resolution: In the event of a significant conflict between the first two reviews, a third independent reviewer is assigned to provide a final evaluation and assist the Editorial Board in making a balanced decision.

  • Review Timeline: ESJ is committed to a timely editorial process. The typical duration from the initial assignment of reviewers to the first editorial decision is 3–6 weeks.

5. Publication Ethics

  • The Engineering and Sustainability Journal (ESJ) is fully committed to upholding the highest standards of research integrity and ethical publishing, adhering rigorously to the guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All submissions are systematically screened for originality using iThenticate, ensuring strict compliance with anti-plagiarism standards.

  • ESJ promotes transparency and reproducibility by encouraging authors to make their underlying research data accessible to readers, facilitating verification and further scientific inquiry.

  • The journal maintains zero tolerance for unethical practices, including redundant publication, data fabrication or falsification, and gift or honorary authorship.

  • Authors are expected to fully disclose all contributions and conflicts of interest, and to conduct their research in a manner that respects ethical, legal, and societal norms. Through these policies, ESJ safeguards the integrity, reliability, and credibility of the scientific record, reinforcing its commitment to advancing high-quality engineering and sustainability research.

6. Archiving & Preservation

  • Digital Security and Backups
BICOT, through its online platform Angola-Journals.com, ensures the security and integrity of the data for all hosted open-access journals. Robust technical measures are in place to prevent data loss, including comprehensive daily backups performed on internal servers as well as secure external locations. These protocols ensure that the journal's digital infrastructure is resilient and that all editorial content is protected against technical failure.

  • Long-Term Preservation
For long-term digital preservation, all material hosted on the platform is archived with the National Library of Angola, in strict compliance with the Angolan Legal Deposit Law. This institutional partnership ensures that the scientific record of the Engineering and Sustainability Journal (ESJ) is preserved in the national heritage archives, safeguarding its availability for future generations of researchers and the public.

7. Article Processing Charges (APC)

The Engineering and Sustainability Journal (ESJ) operates as an Open Access publication. To support high-quality editorial management and permanent global accessibility, a one-time Article Processing Charge (APC) is applied only upon formal acceptance of a manuscript.
